Known for its culture and commerce, Yorkville provides travelers with a unique place to immerse themselves in NYC's immigrant culture. A leisurely stroll through this unique neighbourhood will have you longing for an extended stay, but don't take Action's word for it. Take a drive through Yorkville during your upcoming Manhattan car rental vacation and check out the neighbourhoods unique offerings for yourself.
Construction is no obstruction in this neighbourhood
Construction has been a major cause of traffic congestion on the Upper East Side for the past year, thanks to the new Second Avenue subway line. Since 2007, the blacktop between East 91st and 95th street has been chewed up and repaved repeatedly, making it difficult for Manhattan car rental travelers to discover Yorkville. If you can brave the detours, Action Manhattan car rental travelers will find that Eastern European-flavoured commerce continues in this lively neighbourhood, thanks to Hungarian newsstands and SoCal-styled boutiques. Specialty eateries and attractive apartments only add to the appeal of this Upper East Side entity, as do the views of the East River from Carl Schurz Park.
The boundaries of Yorkville
The Yorkville neighbourhood is bordered by the East River to the east, 96th Street on the north, Third Avenue on the West and 79th Street to the south. This southern boundary is greatly debated however, so don't be surprised if you hear differently during your upcoming Manhattan car rental vacation. Some sources and natives considered 59th Street to be the southern boundary, while others insist it's 72nd Street. The only thing that's certain is that Yorkville's boundaries have changed over time. At one point in time, all of what is now considered to be the Upper East Side was known as Yorkville.
A quick look back in time
Immigrants have long been the majority in Yorkville, creating a tight-knit working-class neighbourhood. During the nineteenth and twentieth century, the area was comprised mainly of Albanian, Czech, German, Hungarian, Irish and Jewish peoples. Customers of Action Manhattan Car Rental still hear the neighbourhood being referred to as the "German Broadway". Back in the day, each ethnicity had their own unofficial thoroughfare. What is now 79th Street was known as Hungarian Boulevard, acting as a hub for Austro-Hungarian residents and visitors. Top restaurants in this area include the Viennese Lantern and Tokay. A number of the original butchers are still in operation along the street today. Bohemian Boulevard was 72nd Street and included Czech, Pole and Slovak residents. German Boulevard was on 86th Street. A handful of fantastic restaurants were located along this roadway, however they have long been replaced by boutiques and fast food joints.
Yorkville in the modern era
Unlike the rest of Manhattan, Yorkville prides itself on being a little behind the times. Customers of Action Manhattan Car Rental will find very few chic clubs in the area, and numerous non-chain restaurants. Travelers will also find a large student presence in the neighbourhood, due in part to the Fordham Graduate Housing Buildings on 81t Street between York and East End. The affordable cost of housing the area attracts students from all over the city, including those registered with Berkeley College, the New York Film Academy and the American Academy of Dramatic Arts.
While construction impedes many visitors, it's worth noting the extraordinary nature of this city neighbourhood. Affordable, yet refined, Yorkville is home to Gracie Mansion, the official home of the mayor of NYC. Notable attractions include the Lifshitz Gallery on East 77th Street, the Hungarian Meat Market on Second Avenue and Logos Books on York. If you can only afford an afternoon in the neighbourhood, Action Manhattan Car Rental recommends focusing your visit along Second Avenue. It's where you'll find the best eateries and shops.
