A brief history of Wave Hill...

Wave Hill was actually a country home built by jurist William Lewis Morris in 1843. Between 1866 to1903 it was owned by William Henry Appleton who enlarged the house in 1866 and once again in 1890. Wave Hill attracted pioneering natural scientists such as Thomas Henry Huxley and Charles Darwin. In fact, Huxley was so taken with Wave Hill that he declared the Palisades across the river one of the world's greatest natural wonders.

During the summers of 1870 and 1871 Theodore Roosevelt's family rented Wave Hill (the future president was 12 years of age during his first visit). It was there that Theodore's love of nature and the outdoors that would see him preserving millions of acres of American parkland in his future presidential years. The next famous resident was Mark Twain who leased the estate from 1901 to 1903. He set up a treehouse parlor in the branches of a chestnut tree on the lawn. Other famous residents of Wave Hill include the conductor Arturo Toscanini (1942 - 1945) and chef members of the British Delegations to the United Nations (1950 - 1956).
