Long Island Rental Car and the Wantagh Museum and Preservation Society

The Wantagh Museum and Preservation Society is based in Wantagh, Long Island that you can visit with your Long Island rental car. The Preservation Society maintains the museum and has activities to improve the historical and environmental values of the community.

All aboard!

The Wantagh Museum is housed in three structures: The Station, The "Jamaica" Railroad Car, and the Original Wantagh Post Office. The Station was built in 1885 and was originally on Railroad Avenue. In 1966, The Station was moved to its current location to save it from demolition when the railroad service was expanded. It was restored to its original 1904 appearance. It was also built to reflect the presence of Emma Whitmore, the first woman to serve as a ticket agent in the Wantagh Station.

Take a ride

The Jamaica was built in 1912 for the Long Island Railroad. It was a parlor car complete with solarium, cooking facilities, and even an ice-cooled air conditioning system. It was donated to the Preservation Society in 1972 to become part of the museum that you can now visit with your Long Island rental car.

Slow down

Across from The Station is Wantagh's Original Post Office, which is in the process of being restored. It was built in 1907 and once stood on the corner of Wantagh and Railroad Avenues. At that time, Wantagh was a rural town populated mostly by farmers. Until the 1920s, the original post office was operated by one person. With The Station and the Jamaica, you can see what it was like to live in the area 100 years ago. There are a number of old photographs that you can also view when you visit with your Long Island rental car.

Plan your visit

The Wantagh Museum is open Sunday from 2 p.m. until 4 p.m. April through December. The hours may change because it is staffed by volunteers. The Society holds meetings on the fourth Tuesday of each month and sponsors a number of community events. To get here with your Long Island rental car, take the Southern State Parkway to Exit 28 South (Wantagh Avenue). Go south on Wantagh Avenue for about 1.3 miles and the Wantagh Museum is on the right. You can also take the Sunrise Highway to Wantagh Avenue North (there is a Radio Shack on the corner). Go north on Wantagh Avenue for about 0.6 miles. The museum is on the left.

The Wantagh Museum is a great place to learn what life was like at the turn of the century with your Long Island rental car.
