The New York Stock Exchange is the worlds largest global market trading center by dollar value, and the second largest by number of listings. History of the NYSE

Origins of the current New York Stock Exchange can be traced all the way back to the original Buttonwood Agreement which was signed by twenty-four stock brokers back on May 17th, 1792. Twenty-five years later an organizational constitution was drafted, renaming the group the New York Stock & Exchange Board in 1817. The name would later be shorted to its current form in 1863. The NYSE experience almost instant success when it first began, gaining speed and popularity up until it was forced to shut shortly after the beginning of World War I. The exchange would later reopen just four months later in order to help the war effort through the trading of bonds. Other significant events in the New York Stock Exchanges history include a terrorist attach of September 16th, 1920, the crash which triggered the Great Depression of the 1930s and the mini-crash of October 27th, 1997.

How the NYSE Works

The New York Stock Exchange is designed in a continuous auction format. This means that in order to conduct business, traders must be present on the trading floor. Exchange members interested in buying and/or selling any number of shares on behalf of an investor must therefore gather around the appropriate post where a specialist broke acts as a kind of auctioneer, attraction buyers and sellers with an open outcry. This level of human interaction is believed to provide a level of expert judgment alien to those markets which rely completely on electronic trading forums. Nearly 1.61 billion shares are traded on the floor of the New York Stock Exchange everyday providing investors with the worlds most efficient form of financial trading.
