Tackapausha Museum and Preserve is a nature sanctuary on the South Shore that you can visit with your rent a car in Long Island. It features 84 acres of oak forests, ponds, and streams as well as a variety of small mammals and bird species for you to explore.

Become one with nature

The Tackapausha Preserve was the first area of land acquired by Nassau County in 1938 and was originally bought for drainage purposes. It is now one of the most popular preserves that you can visit with your rent a car in Long Island on the South Shore. It is bordered by Merrick Road to the south and Jerusalem Avenue on the north, providing residents and visitors to become one with nature on their five miles of clearly marked trails.

There are trails that make their way through the different sections. In the southern section between Merrick Road and Sunrise Highway the preserve is home to the largest Atlantic White Cedar group of trees in Nassau County. These are found in a swamp just north of Tackapausha Pond. In the central section, between Sunrise Highway and Clark Avenue, there is a small, secluded pond that draws waterfowl and amphibians. Finally, in the northern section, between Clark and Jerusalem Avenues, there is a small wetland. If you like bird watching, the many trails are great to explore before going back to your rent a car in Long Island. There have been more than 170 bird species identified within the preserve, as well as racoon, muskrat, gray squirrel, and opossum.

Tackapausha Nature Preserve and Museum is open Tuesday through Saturday from 10 a.m. until 4 p.m. and Sunday from 1-4 p.m. all year long. Admission is $2 for adults and $1 for children 4-14. Children under 4 are free. They are located on Washington Avenue in Seaford, New York. Parking is available for your rent a car in Long Island.

During the 19th century, as villages across Long Island grew due to the Long Island Railroad, this area seemed to remain the same.
