New York Car Rentals and St. Bartholomews
St. Bartholomew's is an Episcopal church founded in 1835 in what is now Midtown Manhattan. Visiting this church with your New York car rental on Park Avenue and 51st Street will allow you to visit one of New York's older churches, with the largest pipe organ in New York.
The church was designed by Bertram Goodhue and has stained-glass windows and mosaics by Hildreth Meiere. It is considered as one of the city's landmarks, drawing parishioners from all areas of the city. One of the things to be seen here with your New York car rental is the pipe organ, one of the ten largest in the world. One of the former organists was world-famous conductor Leopold Stokowski, and the choir achieved distinction under William Trafka and James Litton. Today, the Chorister Program has had success in brining children from 6-18 together to sign and has been featured on shows like The Today Show and Good Morning America.
Getting started
St. Bartholomew's, or St. Bart's as it is known to locals, was founded in 1835 in the then-fashionable section of Manhattan. Growth was slow at first, but by 1872 the church was large and prosperous enough to build a large church in its current location. The rector called for the church to become a force in the social welfare of the city. During immigration waves in the late 19th century, many new arrivals lived here in the parish house on 42nd street, and was also instrumental in helping the poor in the 1940s and 1950s. Visiting the church with your New York car rental will give you a chance to see how they helped.
Examining differences
One of the things you will learn about when you visit St. Bartholomew's with your New York car rental is how the church is examining the differences between religions. The Center for Religious Inquiry is an inter-religious program based at the church that offers an opportunity for religious seekers to study their religion and other religious traditions within a safe and non-judgmental environment. Instructors are academics who are known for their teaching skills and knowledge, and classes are open to anyone who is interested in learning about other faiths. Some of the instructors have come from Harvard, Yale, Columbia, and other famous universities and theological schools.
In recent years there has been a renewal of the church.
