Rebuilding Baseball in NYC

When Shea Stadium opened on April 17th, 1964 it marked the beginning of an all new baseball era in NYC. Since losing the Dodgers and Giants to expansion teams on the West Coast, New York was left with one MLB baseball team - the untouchable Yankees. In order to stop the Yankees monopoly on professional sport, William A. Shea made it is mission to bring another baseball team back to the streets of New York City. The stadium of the newly formed New York Mets now boasts the name of this instrumental individual. Shea Stadium has proudly housed the Mets since opening in 1964. The stadium also hosted the 1964 Major League Baseball All-Star Game. Even the enemy has hosted home games in Shea Stadium! Since opening, Shea Stadium has also been converted into a football field, providing the New York Jets NFL team with a home from 1964 to 1983.
