A little history

The NYC Pride March is the oldest gay parade, it was first held in 1969. It is known as March and not as a Parade until there is full equality for the LGBTQ community. It was early Saturday Morning June 28, 1969 when LGBT people rioted after a police raid on the gay bar, Stonewall Inn in the Greenwich Village. The Stonewall Riot is considered by many to be the beginning of the modern gay rights movement. On the first anniversary of the Stonewall Riot on June 28, 1970, the Gay Liberation Front organized a march. The march started in Greenwich Village to Central Park. Marches were also held in Los Angeles and San Francisco in the same weekend. In the 1980s the name was replaced with Gay Pride.

The organizers

The NYC Pride Festival is organized of Heritage of Pride (HOP), a volunteer, non-partisan, tax-exempt, non-profit organization that organizes lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) pride events in New York City to commemorate the Stonewall riots. HOP is one of the few LGBT organizations that is run at the grass-roots level. HOP welcomes the participation of all, regardless of age, creed, gender, gender identification, HIV status, national origin, physical, mental or developmental ability, race, or religion.
