What is geocaching?

Geocaching is an outdoor activity in which the participants use a Global Positioning System (GPS) receiver or other navigational techniques to hide and seek containers (called "geocaches" or "caches") anywhere in the world. A typical cache is a small waterproof container (usually a tupperware or ammo box) containing a logbook. Larger containers can also contain items for trading, usually toys or trinkets of little value. Geocaching is a game of high-tech hide and seek, similar to orienteering, treasure-hunting, and waymarking. A little history

Geocaching is similar to the 150-year-old game letterboxing, which uses clues and references. Geocaching began sometime around May 1, 2000 when Selective Availability from GPS was removed allowing for enough accuracy to locate a small container that had been specifically placed. he first documented placement of a GPS-located cache took place on May 3, 2000, by Dave Ulmer of Beavercreek, Oregon . The location was posted on the Usenet newsgroup sci.geo.satellite-nav as 4517.460'N 12224.800'W / 45.291N 122.4133W. By May 6, 2000, it had been found twice and logged once (by Mike Teague of Vancouver, Washington). According to Dave Ulmer's message, the original stash was a black plastic bucket buried most of the way in the ground and contained software, videos, books, food, money, and a slingshot.

How it works

It all starts when a geocacher places a waterproof container with a log book, a pen, and certain trade items. The caches coordinates are than taken and posted on a listing site. O ther geocachers obtain the coordinates from that listing site and seek out the cache using their GPS handheld receivers. The finding geocachers record their exploits in the logbook and online. Geocachers are free to take objects (except the logbook, pencil, or stamp) from the cache in exchange for leaving something of similar or higher value, so there is something for the next person to find. Typical caches are small trinkets that hold high personal value to the owner such as coins, small toys, ornamental buttons, CDs, and books. You never know what treasure you may discover when you travel with your LaGuardia airport car rental.

Getting around

Also common are objects that are moved from cache to cache called "hitchhikers", such as Travel Bugs or Geocoins, whose travels may be logged and followed online. Cachers who initially place a Travel Bug or Geocoin often assign specific goals for their trackable items. Examples of goals are to be placed in a certain cache a long distance from home, or to travel to a certain country, or to travel faster and farther than other hitchhikers in a race. Higher value items are occasionally included in geocaches as a reward for the First to Find (called "FTF"), or in locations which are harder to reach.

Its all in the name

Geocaching was originally called GPS Stash Hunt and gpsstashing. However, after a long discussion on May 30, 2000, Matt Stum suggested the name geocaching
