The original Nissan Altima released in '93 was a renamed version of the Japanese-marketed Nissan Bluebird. This "American" car was a five-seater that boasted a modesty sporty appeal and a good reputation for reliability. Although it was a shade smaller than other imported family sized sedans it was still a weighty competitor. Initially the Nissan Altima came in three trim levels - the XE, GXE and the SE. The fully loaded GLE was added mid year but was only available for a minimum production time. The XE version was the most basic of the three, yet it offered a wide variety of amenities that would normally cost extra including cruise control, power mirrors and a tilting steering column. The loaded GXE offered even more including lavish upholstery and trim upgrades along with a CFC-Free air conditioning system. The SE version had a more adventurous feel with sport tuned suspension and a limited slip differential. This slip technology was pioneered by Nissan, using a viscous coupling type of slip differential onto the front wheel drive. This helps to improve traction on slipper surfaces immensely, keeping you and your loved ones safe and secure.
Changes between the introductory year and the '96 models were pretty limited. An additional air bag was added on the passenger side along with a minor redisgn of the '95's front end grill and monochrome taillights. The dependable 2.4 liter twin cam engine that was capable of pumping out 150 horsepower was left unchanged. This engine has an efficient fuel consumption rate at 9.8 liters per 100 kilometers in the city and 7.2 per 100 kilometers on the freeway.

The Altima's distinctive sloping tail-end and tight, rattle-free body helped add to the vehicles overall appearance. Sales of the Altima were steady, more the doubling that of its predecessor, the Stanza, in the first year alone. In 1996 and '97 the Altima won the JD Power Best in Class for quality award as sales continued to climb and customer satisfaction began rolling in! The 1998 version of the Altima boasted an enlarged cabin and superior quality. More angular shapes were used that helped to boost the fuel economy and reduce interior noise pollution. The rear seatback folded to create extra cargo space, plus the trunk area could spill into the back seat once the rear liftover was lowered, creating even more space! Models for the 2000 year underwent a variety of changes including engine upgrades that helped improve horsepower and engine emissions while the addition of a cross-car brace helped to enhance handling and steering. Seat-mounted side airbags and head protection were made standard in the 2000 models increasing the safety of all passengers.
The 2002 Nissan Altima was the first vehicle to be designed under the companies Revival Plan, instituted by company president Carlos Ghosn, and the resulting vehicle was absolutely stellar! The 2002 model boasts a cleaner sheet design, which means a bigger, more powerful, better-handling and roomier car! The engine was a standard 175 horsepower, 2.5 liter 4-cylinder DOHC. This engine was available with both the 4 speed automatic and 5 speed manual transmission, making it an absolute joy to drive! A New type of independent 4 wheel suspension was also standard on the new Altimas which proved to be a cut above all other vehicles in its class. This new and improved vehicle won the North American Car of the Year award and has proven to be a popular consumer choice. Look for even more additions to the new 2005 Altima, on sale now!
