Newark Liberty International Airport

The Newark International Airport is one of the Big Three airports in New York City, (JFK and LaGuardia are the other two). Newark International is located in Newark, New Jersey, handles both international flights and domestic US flights. This facility is the most modern of the Big Three and is normally less crowded than JFK and LaGuardia; (no more getting lost in the parking lot trying to find your New York rental car!). Although it is located a bit further away from the city than that of the other two Airports, it is well worth the drive in your New York rental car.

Newark Liberty International Airport Information The Newark Liberty Airport (also called EWR for short) is located just between the New Jersey Turnpike in Union and Essex Counties. It is only a short drive in your New York rental car from midtown Manhattan about approximately 15 miles by highway. If you plan to be travelling to Newark Liberty from Brooklyn in your New York rental car the following directions will be of some help:

  • Go west on the I-495 (the Long Island Expressway) to the I-278 (or the Brooklyn Queens Expressway, commonly called the BQE)
  • Go south on the BQE to the Verrazano Bridge where you will continue west on the I-278 to the Goethals Bridge
  • Travel across the bridge and take the New Jersey turnpike north to exit 13A or Exit 14
  • Follow the signs to the airport

Be sure to leave yourself plenty of time when travelling in your New York rental car to the Newark Liberty Airport. Traffic on the turnpike has been known to get pretty ugly during peak hours, so make sure to plan ahead. If you have already returned your New York rental car there are plenty of other public transportation options such as the subway or taxi, so be sure to check out schedules or rates.

The Newark airport provides over 20,000 parking spaces, with 17, 000 of these open to the public
