Garden City is a village in central Nassau County in the Town of Hempstead that you can visit with your Garden City car rental. The name Garden City is commonly applied to the unincorporated areas in the region as well, including Garden City South, Garden City Park, and East Garden City.

Birth of a town

In 1869, self-made millionaire Alexander Turney Stewart bought a portion of the Hempstead Plains and founded the Village of Garden City. It was created as an upscale community for those who wanted to get away from New York City. The village was successful because it was close to Hempstead, which at the time was the commercial center of Long Island. Garden City was an important part of the history of aviation. In 1927, Charles Lindbergh took off on his transatlantic flight from Roosevelt Field in East Garden City. Today, the site is one of the largest shopping malls in the world. To learn more about the history of aviation, you can visit the Cradle of Aviation Museum with your Garden City car rental. This is located on what was once part of the Mitchel Air Force Base. The museum is home to more than 60 aircraft and scale models of airplanes throughout history. Some of the planes they have on display include Charles Lindbergh’s original trainer aircraft, an A-10 Thunderbolt II and Grumman F-14 Tomcat, as well as an actual unused Apollo Lunar Module.

Roosevelt Field Mall is the largest shopping center in the state of New York and one of the biggest in the country that you can visit with your Garden City car rental. There are also a number of specialty stores such as Coach, Betsy Johnson, Abercrombie & Fitch, Hot Topic, Sephora, and the Disney Store.
