Nassau County Car Rental and the Cedarmere Museum
Cedarmere is a historic property of the prominent 19th century poet, newspaper editor, and civic leader, William Cullen Bryant. It includes the Bryant home and several other structures that you can visit with your Nassau County car rental overlooking Roslyn Harbor.
Find a piece of history
Cedarmere was once the rural home of the Bryant family on Long Island from 1843 until Bryant's death in 1878. It was a place to escape from the pressures and congestion of the city where Bryant could work on his poetry and relax in nature.
Discover the property
The oldest part of Cedarmere was built in 1787 by Richard Kirk, a Quaker farmer. Bryant enlarged the house, with several renovations. Numerous exotic plants and flowers were planted on the ground, making it a horticultural showplace. After his death, Bryant's daughter took over the house with grandson Harold Godwin. Godwin added a stone bridge and sunken garden to the grounds. He also rebuilt the house in 1902 after a major fire.
