New York City Car Rental and the Brooklyn Bridge

The Brooklyn Bridge is one of the United States' oldest suspension bridges, stretching over 5 989 feet over the East River. It connects the New York City boroughs, Manhattan and Brooklyn together. Construction began in January 3, 1870 and at its completion 13 years later on May 24, 1883, 1 800 vehicles and 150 300 people crossed the bridge. The Brooklyn Bridge was the largest suspension bridge in the world (2 times larger then the previous record) and the first steel-wire suspension bridge. In total, it cost $15.1 million to build the iconic Brooklyn Bridge. When traveling with your New York City car rental company NYC Exotic Car Rentals you should definitely plan a stopover here!

Misfortune strikes...

The Brooklyn Bridge was designed by the same engineering firm owned by John Augustus Roebling of Trenton, New Jersey, who also built the John A. Roebling Suspension Bridge in Cincinnati, Ohio and the Waco Suspension Bridge in Waco Texas. The two former suspension bridges actually served as a prototype for the future Brooklyn landmark. However, misfortune struck the Roebling family. Not long after the construction of the bridge, Roebling died of tetanus caused by the amputation of his toes from a ferry accident. Washington, his son, took over the project but he suffered from caisson disease and it would be his wife, Emily Warren Roebling who became his aide. Emily Warren Roebling learned engineering and communicated with the on-site assistants, in truth, she probably had more to do with the building project then Washington did. This is just some of the amazing history you will find when traveling with your New York City car rental company NYC Exotic Car Rentals.

Last one standing...

The Brooklyn Bridge is built in a Gothic style and is made from limestone, granite, and Rosendale natural cement. Spanning over the East River at 1 595 feet 6 inches, Roebling built the bridge to what he believed would be six times stronger then needed. It is thanks to this thinking that the Brooklyn Bridge still stands today. At the time of the Brooklyn Bridge's building, aerodynamics of bridges has not yet been established. It was after the collapse of the Tacoma Narrows Bridge in the 1940s that bridges began to be tested in wind tunnels. You have no need to worry when you're traveling with your New York City car rental company NYC Exotic Car Rentals!

Walking the path...

Today, the bridge has 6 lanes for motor vehicles, a lane for bicycles, and a walkway for pedestrians.
