A step back in time

Westbury is part of the Town of North Hempstead, which occupies the northwest part of Nassau County. The area was first settled around 1643. During the American Revolution, it was primarily a Tory stronghold, supporting the British. However, the people were also fiercely independent, signing their own Declaration of Independence from the Town of Hempstead in 1775. The Town of North Hempstead came about in 1784. With the Long Island Railroad, the area became more affluent. Today there are 30 incorporated villages that you can visit in the area with your Westbury car rental.

This is the area along the entire peninsula on the north shore that is made up of nine villages and unincorporated areas of North Hempstead. There is a large park district within this area. Great Neck is a great place to leave your Westbury car rental because it is within easy commuting distance of Manhattan’s Penn Station and is the only station on the Port Washington Branch, aside from Penn Station, that is served by all local and express trains. Great Neck was once a farming community, but was transformed into a commuter town with the arrival of the railroad. Great Neck and Kings Point were the backdrop of The Great Gatsby. The town symbolized the decadence of the Twenties and was home to stars like Sid Caesar and the Marx Brothers.

Relax in the sun

This thirty-four acre beach has a promenade, fishing pier, bath house, and concession stand. There are also basketball and shuffleboard courts, horseshoe pits, picnic areas, and a playground. During the summer there is a Sunday Afternoon Concert Series which begins July 4th and continues each Sunday until September 1st.

Venture east

On the eastern edge of the Town of North Hempstead is the Village of Roslyn, which you can visit with your Westbury car rental. In the Roslyn area there are a few attractions for you to see. There is the Nassau County Museum of Art of the former estate of Childs Frick. There is also Cedarmere, the former estate of William Cullen Bryant. You can find the grave of Bryant and Frances Hodgson Burnett, author of The Secret Garden, are both buried in Roslyn Cemetery.
