The Bailey Arboretum is a 43-acre area of woods, ponds, and gardens in Lattingtown on Long Island's North Shore. The Bailey Arboretum features Dawn Redwoods. These were discovered in China in 1941, having been believed to have been extinct for millions of years. When you visit, you can find more than 20 Dawn Redwoods. They are classified as "critically endangered" by the World Conservation Union, but one of the ones planted here has the largest girth for any Dawn Redwood in the world. You can spot the Dawn Redwood by the pyramidal silhouette and the ropy trunk.
