If you have decided that you want to go ahead and rent that car of your dreams, well have you also decided what you are going to do with it? Instead of doing the usual tourist thing, why not go on some scenic drives and see the other side of things that New Jersey really has to offer. Some suggestions are:

Morris, Sussex & Warren Counties - The Skylands Region
This drive can take you through some of New Jersey's most beautiful scenery some historic sites and a theater in a castle.

The place to begin it all is Netcong, near New Jersey's largest lake, Lake Hopatcong, where you sit back and appreciate the magnificent greenery from a little sailboat. Nearby is Waterloo Village in Stanhope, which is a restored 19th- century village with unique shops, historic tours and festivals. To continue, take Route 206 North to Andover and turn left onto Route 517 South, you will see fantastic scenery in Allamuchy Mountain State ParkIf you have time, stop and walk the park's hiking trails or enjoy a family picnic.

Go onwards from Allamuchy, take 1-80 West to Exit 12 and the village of Hope, an 18th-century Moravian village that offers walking tours of the church, gristmill and cemetery. Close to the town there is Jenny Jump State Forest, featuring hiking, camping and picnic facilities, as well as Tamuzza Vineyards and Winery, offering tours and tastings, sales and special events.

Take Route 519 South to Route 46 East. In Hackettstown, make a point to stop and tour the Pequest Trout Hatchery and Natural Resource Center and learn about the raising of New Jersey trout as well as the importance of protecting natural resources.

Follow Route 46 past Budd Lake- where you will find Pax Amicus Castle Theatre presents Broadway and off-Broadway revivals and musicals, comedies and children's theatre in a dramatic castle setting-and on back to Netcong.

Sussex County - Skylands Region
This is a scenic drive through the high mountains of the northernmost portion of New Jersey beginning in Newton. Follow Route 206 North through Tuttles Corner and Stokes State Forest, where there are bridle and hiking paths, scenic overlooks, nature trails and picnic facilities, and crosses the Appalachian Trail.

Not far away is the Delaware Water Gap National Recreation Area, known as one of the most beautiful spots in New Jersey. You can go boating along the Delaware River, separating New Jersey and Pennsylvania, hike, or pitch a tent and camp for the night.

Follow until you reach Montague, and then turn right onto Route 653 East to Route 23 South. Stop and visit High Point State Park, which is the highest elevation in New Jersey (1,803 feet). On a clear day, you can see 80 miles of spectacular views. Sussex Airport offers airplane rides for a bird's-eye view.

Keep on Route 23 through Hamburg, a great place to stop for children to enjoy the Gingerbread Castle and its narrated tours, storytelling, farm and petting zoo. The lunch and dinner theatre is open year-round.

You will then come to Franklin, which is home to the Franklin Mineral Museum, where minerals from New Jersey and around the world are on display.

Past Franklin, take Route 517 South through Ogdensburg. Stop and tour underground mines and historic buildings at Sterling Hill l Mining Museum.

Stay on Route 517 until Sparta. Then turn right onto Route 517 Spur and head on back to Newton.
