About the New York Science Hall

Since 1964 the New York Hall of Science has undergone some pretty drastic changes, but one thing still remains the same the Great Hall. The oldest part of the establishment, the Great Hall was showcased as the centerpiece for the 1964 Worlds Fair thanks to its unique design and charming craftsmanship. Composed of thousands of tiny glass pieces embedded into monstrous 80 foot concrete walls (the construction technique is called dalle de verre), the Great Hall is currently the largest structure of its kind in the world. Exhibits within the Great Hall are constantly changing to keep up with current scientific study in the fields of physics, biology, chemistry and astronomy. Family-favorite displays within the Great Hall and other sections of the New York Hall of Science include:

  • The Sports Challenge: Designed to teach kids about the aerodynamics of their favorite sports, the Sport Challenge requires participants to stand on a rocking board while attempting to pitch a baseball.
  • The Science Playground: Open during the summer months, the Summer Playground lets children climb, jump, slide and swing their way towards a great understanding of motion, energy and physics.
  • The Hidden Kingdoms: Miniscule microbes take center stage in this interactive display, which is designed to teach children about different kinds of bacteria and mold.
