Hybrid Car Rentals and New York City Waterfalls
Public art is an important part of any cityscape. It provides people with a place to meet, reflect and appreciate the vibrant city they call home. So what better way to celebrate New York City than to create some new art installations? 2008 marks the first time in recent memory that New York has undertaken a massive citywide art project, designed to excite and engage the general public. But these aren't your ordinary sculptures or murals; these public art pieces were designed to make a major statement, just like NYC itself. It's Action Hybrid Car Rentals pleasure to introduce to you, the NYC Waterfalls Project.
What they are
The New York City Waterfalls are four fantastic installation pieces located throughout the New York City Harbor. Customers of Action Hybrid Car Rentals will be able to see them from a variety of locations, and from the vantage point of many major attractions. Man-made and electrically-powered, these waterfalls will be erected in the harbour from mid-July to mid-October 2008. They are each approximately 90 to 120 feet tall and operate between 7am and 10pm. Customers of Action Hybrid Car Rentals can see them illuminated come sunset.
Where are they?
Customers of Action Hybrid Car Rentals will find the waterfalls in four iconic harbour front positions. They are all strategically placed in order to be visible from the South Street Seaport. The first is located at Pier 35 in Manhattan, just north of the Williamsburg Bridge. The second is placed just off of Governor's Island, while the third is located between Piers 4 and 5 in Brooklyn. The final and most magnificent waterfall will be located beneath the Brooklyn Bridge, utilizing one of the anchorage struts as its apex.
The people responsible for them
The New York City Waterfalls were created by famed artist Olafur Eliasson. The project has been in the works since 2006. The project is funded by the Public Art Fund, in collaboration with the City of New York. Customers of Action Hybrid Car Rentals should also note that a number of other local organizations have funded the waterfall project, including the Tishman Construction Corporation, the Carson Family Charitable Trust and The Horace W. Goldsmith Foundation.
Where to get the best views
- By land: Customers of Action Hybrid Car Rentals can get the best view of the waterfalls from Pier 17 at the South Street Seaport. Another interesting view is from the Brooklyn Promenade. From here, you'll have great views of the installation at Pier 6 and a clear view at the waterfall off of Governor's Island.
- By boat: This is by far the best way to check out the waterfall's exhibit as it allows you to get right up close to the installations. A handful of water taxi companies are offering special guided tours of the falls Action Hybrid Car Rentals recommends checking out the Circle Line Downtown and the New York Water Taxi. The Staten Island Ferry is a great free way to see some of the falls, particularly the Governor's Island installation.
The New York City Waterfalls are only around until mid-October 2008, so don't wait. Plan to check them out during your upcoming Action Hybrid Car Rentals vacation.
