Curtain's up...
Since the first performance on February 21, 1994 of Puccini's Tosca, the New York City's newest opera company was officially opened. The founders of the New York City Opera dreamed of becoming an opera company that would support America's home grown talent of composers and singers while also being accessible to everybody. It would be 22 years later, on February 22, 1966 to be exact, when the New York City Opera would have its large reopening for its inaugural performance at its new location in the Philip Johnson New York State Theater at Lincoln Center. In 1945, the opera scene saw the first African American performer in a major opera company. Tom Duncan performed as Tonio in Leoncavallo's I Pagliacci. In 1946, Camilla Williams became the first African American woman who took the stage. She sang as soprano as Madama Butterfly. The New York City Opera also stayed true to its mission of supporting their homegrown artists. Douglas Moore's The Ballad of Baby Doe, Carlisle Floyd's Susannah, Rachel Portman's The Little Prince, Charles Wuorinen's Haroun and the Sea of Stories, and Mark Adamo's Little Women are just some of the works that have taken the stage.
Small beginnings, big future...
American soprano Beverly Sills broke out from the crowd in 1966 in Handel's Giulio Cesare as Cleopatra. Her performance was outstanding and the audience loved her. Afterwards, Sills went on to sing in opera houses all over the world but she still remembered her beginnings and remained affiliated with the New York City Opera. In 1979, Sill officially retired from the stage and joined the New York City Opera as a General Director up until 1989. Other careers launched by the New York City Opera include among others, Sherrill Milnes, Carol Vaness, and Samuel Ramey. Internationally acclaimed stars that still proudly claim New York City Opera include David Daniels, Mark Devlavan, Lauren Flanigan, Elizabeth Futral, and Amy Burton.
