It was the home of General Washington for two months in 1776. It hosted a succession of British and Hessian military leaders. It was an inn for exhausted travelers passing by. Eventually, it went back to its original role as a small country house. What is it, you ask? The oldest house in Manhattan, it's the Morris-Jumel Mansion. The Morris-Jumel Mansion was built in 1765 by British Colonel Roger Morris and his wife Mary Philipse. It was a great place for a family to spend their summer because it was at the top of a breezy hill and the sun shone down on the home just perfectly. This home took up more than 130 acres as was known as Mount Morris. Mount Morris went all the way from the Harlem to the Hudson Rivers. After the American victory in the Revolution, the Morrises were required to move back to England. The Morris-Jumel Mansion was soon known for more than being a perfect summer getaway spot. Surrounded by the Bronx, Long Island South, New York City and the Jersey Palisades, the mansion became well known for being a military headquarters. During September and October of 1776, the mansion was home to President George Washington. During the time that he lived here, the General's troops forced the British to retreat at the Battle of Harlem Heights. President Washington came back to the Morris-Jumel Mansion on July 10, 1790 to enjoy a meal with members of the cabinet. Many famous people and future presidents ate at this meal with George Washington. Thomas Jefferson, John Quincy Adams, John Adams, Alexander Hamilton and Henry Knox were some of the very important people in attendance this very day. If you are interested in going on a guided tour during your visit to the mansion, there is a wide variety to choose from. You can select a mansion tour which focuses on architecture, period rooms and the history of the building or a neighborhood tour which takes you on a walk through the four blocks of the area that surrounds the mansion. You can also choose between a mansion tour with tea, a Saturday tour or a self-guided tour. School tours include "A Country House in Manhattan", "The Heights and the Hills" and "Meet General Washington", as well as a few others. Whatever your desire, there is a tour for everyone.

The mansion is open on Monday and Tuesday by appointment only. Every other day of the week, it is open from 10:00am-4:00pm. The mansion is closed on certain holidays. For self-guided visits, admission is $4 for adults and $3 for seniors and students. Admission is free for children 12 and under when they are escorted by an adult. For unreserved guided tours the cost is $5 for adults and $3 for seniors and students. Tours for walk-in guests are only available on Saturdays at noon.
