Bronx Car Rentals and Jerome Park Reservoir

The Jerome Park Reservoir is a park that you can visit with your Bronx car rental in the north part of the borough. It was built in 1906 to serve the Croton Aqueduct as part of the New York City water supply system. It is surrounded by a number of high schools and apartment buildings.

The Jerome Park Reservoir is located near the Jerome Park Racetrack. This was an American thoroughbred horse racing facility that opened in 1866 in the North-west end of Fordham. The first Belmont Stakes was held at Jerome Park Racetrack and continued there until 1890. It is part of the former Old Bathgate Estate. In 1889 the racetrack was condemned and closed to make room for the reservoir.

Get to know the Bronx

While you are visiting with your Bronx car rental, you may learn that the Bronx is divided by the Bronx River into a hillier section to the west (closer to Manhattan) and flatter to the east (closer to Queens and Long Island). The West Bronx was annexed to New York City in 1874 and the areas east of the Bronx River in 1895. It became part of Greater New York in 1898. It is the third most densely populated county in the United States, but about a quarter of its land is open space. Some of the other park areas include Woodlawn Cemetery, Van Cortlandt Park, Pelham Bay Park, the New York Botanical Gardens, nd the Bronx Zoo.

Entertain yourself in style

When you visit the Bronx with your Bronx car rental you may learn that it is home to several Off-Off-Broadway theaters. Many of them stage new works by immigrant playwrights from Latin America and Africa. Some artists from elsewhere in New York have begun to converge in the area, with housing prices rising dramatically. The Bronx Museum of the Arts was founded in 1971 and exhibits 20th century and contemporary art. Many of its exhibitions are themes that are of special interest to the Bronx. There is also the Hall of Fame for Great Americans that overlooks the Harlem River. In order for someone to be nominated to the Hall of Fame for Great Americans, a person must be a native or naturalized citizen of the United States and dead for 25 years and must have made a major contribution to the economic, political, or cultural life of the nation.
