History
Bloomingdales began with the vision of two brothers. Lyman and Joseph Bloomingdale had an innovative retail philosophy. Action Car Rentals New York city car rentals say the brothers were pioneers in the retail arena.
The Bloomingdales opened its first store - a Ladies Notion Shop in New York in 1872. In the era when specialty shops reigned supreme, the Bloomingdale brothers ventured to establish a one-stop-shop or department store.
By 1929, the physical building had expanded to cover an entire city block. In 1931, the Art Deco edifice was completed. This edifice remains on the Lexington Avenue entrance. The first satellite store was opened in Fresh Meadows, Queens in 1949. Ten years later, Bloomingdales stores were in Long Island, Westchester County and New Jersey. By 1996, four more stores were opened in California.
Bloomingdales provided international goods for Americans particularly the European selection. The buying office in Paris that was established in 1886 would be the first of the department stores international network. In the 1960s, the store brought an international flavor to America with labels like Casa Bella featuring home merchandise from Italy. Over the next 30 years, the store brought in cultural exhibits and promotions. Bloomingdales became the department store that launched new designers and created boutiques for those names that were already well known.
Action Car Rentals New York city car rentals ask if you knew that Bloomingdales discovered the following designers:
- Ralph Lauren
- Perry Ellis
- Norma Kamali
- Sonia Rykiel
- Kenzo
- Fendi
Again, Bloomingdales set another milestone in retail history by creating the first designer shopping bag in 1961. The first artist, Joseph Kinigstein, who was commissioned to create a bag for the Esprit de France promotion, reproduced antique French tarot cards in bold white, black and red without the store name. Bloomingdales has continued the tradition of designer shopping bags with artwork created by renowned and unknown artists, architects and ad designers. These bags are considered pieces of art and have been featured in art museums around the globe.
Ten years later, Bloomingdales model rooms earned the international spotlight. Most notable was The Cave a multi-level frame sprayed completely in white polyurethane. Model rooms have also featured filmmaker Federico Fellini and architect Frank Gehry.
