A Brief History of the Theater
When the Apollo Theater first opened in 1914 it was as one of New York Citys leading burlesque venues, opened and operated by two of the citys most influential burlesque operators Jules Hurtig and Harry Seamon. Open to white-only viewers, the Hurtig and Seamons (New) Burlesque Theater would remain in operation until 1928 when Bill Minsky took over, transforming it into the 125th Street Apollo Theater. Sidney Cohen, a powerful theatrical landlord, purchased the Apollo in 1932 upon Minskys untimely death. The Apollo Theater finally opened its doors to African American patrons in 1934, 20 years after the buildings original opening, showcasing a colored review entitled Jazz a la Carte. One of the theaters first African American Amateur Night participants, a dancer turned singing sensation, was none other than Ella Fitzgerald.
The Apollo Theater would go one to obtain international fame before closing its doors in 1977 reopening its doors as a movie theater later that year. Within months the theater had gone bankrupt, forcing the Apollo to shut-down indefinitely in 1978. It would be three years until the Apollo re-opened, this time under the operation of Percy Sutton and the Inner City Broadcasting Corporation. Since then the theater has gone on to regain its spot amongst the worlds greatest performing venues, providing New York City discount car rental travelers with sensational live acts and incredible musical performances. Awarded federal, state and city landmark status in 1983, the Apollo Theater reopened in 1985 boasting a fully renovated stage and seating arrangement.
